What I have Learned in this class/projects I will use in the future.

The Instructional Technology class this semester has taught me a number of things.  First, the class has taught me that technology can be a plus and a negative.  Technology projects take time and organization that will be good if you have that time.  When dealing with technology you can use it to create blogs for your students which are enjoyable to write comments on such as this or even have assignment information accessible from a blog posting sight.  I really enjoyed learning about the voki, which students would not want to hear a follow up on the assignment in a fun voice coming from the teacher himself.  I think I may use this in the future for a special occasions.  I would like to someday create a little video series of hands-on activities that teaches my students the inquiry side of things maybe of when I go on vacation and see some interesting land features.  This video will be done to perfection due to what I have learned on i movie etc.  I can present this to my class through media presented on the smart-board off of youtube and really have  a participating class due to the excitement from the video.  I want to also make a difference in different topics such as cyberbullying and making sure that students are growing in Character using their senses to obey what is good and wise.  Much non-sense goes on in schools today and I want to help stop the bad that goes on with technology too, including plagiarism etc.  It has been a great year in preparation of me being a teacher and I thank you for your time and patience with me as a students!

What is the Future of Technology? How does this impact me?

Technology is one aspect of the 21st century that is extremely hard to predict where it will be in the near or far future for teachers.  However, it does quit frankly affect me.  Here are my thoughts on the future of technology despite this debate that takes places.  I think that teachers are going to move towards the new smart-boards in classrooms as well as start to use different approaches to distributing literature and different levels will be accessible as we continue teaching higher and lower level learners. Technology may affect the way that I teach because it can be hard to depict which style of learning I will be enforcing in my classroom, more standards based or curriculum, or free to be general and apply it to certain aspects of education.  My teaching will set the tone for whether some of the students succeed in certain areas or not and thus, new technology can be a crazy thing to rely on as it is constantly in new paradigm shifts. So as a teacher I am going to be a lifelong learner as I continue to be the best I can be.  When new things come out, I want to access whether or not it will be beneficial to my class or not and take a look at it, we just need to be careful not to just up and accept it right away if it develops students who do not think for themselves like we want them too. We do not want to create people who do not have the wisdom of knowledge when they are not with their computers.  We need to develop students into very cognitive thinkers full of integrity to face the hard spots in life with a confident attitude.

Academic Honesty

The definition of academic honesty is when you actually did the work that you say you did as well as when you cite the works and quotes from works that you used. When you have presented research materials fairly and truthfully your conscience can relax and you can turn in good personal work that is not stolen or mis-used.
Some behaviors to avoid would be thing such as cheating,  unauthorized collaboration, misrepresentation of: experience ability and effort, plagiarism, false records, giving information that isn't right or fake sources.  Sabotage, resubmission of same assignment for different class without permission are all things to avoid.
As teachers we need to remember to teach students about the specific things to avoid in order to promote academic honesty.  We can also model academic honesty to students, teach and enforce consequences for plagiarism and encouraging your students to be a good influence on their friends.

Students tools that they can use to guide themselves along their educational life would be showing how academic dishonesty can result in serious altercation of grades or possible expulsion from school or extra curricular activities.  We can apply to their feelings and emotions by asking, "Can you live with your dishonesty?"  Sharing with them also about their future employers and how they may not have respect for your intelligence or professionalism if you have been caught plagiarizing will impact them greatly.
As a teacher I want to teach this to my students by using the MLA and APA Handbook for students to use when doing assignments.
Reinforce that if you think its a bad idea they should consult with the teacher first and then continue once getting permission.  We must teacher them to be responsible individuals basically as we are all citizens of a nation that needs more quality students avoiding everything to do with being academically dishonest.

Digital Citizenship for Teachers

Digital citizenship for teachers will be important to know how teachers interact on the computer and its technology compared to that of students.  Often teachers need to be aware of viruses and mass emails.  Do not allow yourself to open the email or something could happen.  This is a safety precaution.
Etiquette refers to the set of practices created over the years to make the internet experience pleasant for everyone.  It can be referred to as courteous interactions.  A few rules of online communication as well. If information is not marked with an astrix you should not use it.  Research and truth finding, we need to teach our students to not to sight that wikipedia source.  Getting information from truthful sources.  Communication needs to be looked at electronically and how fast it is today and what can happen.  Cell phones can be used, IM, and e-mail have changed the way technology users communication.  These forms of communication have created a new social structure of who, how and when people interact.
Inappropriate communication would often involve cell phones.  We need to not use poor grammar in forms of writing and so therefore we need to not text shorthand but not create bad habits now.  Online ownership happens as well more often than it should.   Students no longer use books but internet.  We as Christians need to live above reproach.  So an implication for me would be that I would hold high standards for the way in which I communicate online and on computers and use technology as a leader of my classroom.  Online ownership is when you take responsibility for your cyber foot print.  Every time you put something online you are connected to that for the rest of your life.  As teachers we need to be aware of what we put online.  Teachers also need to teach this to their students.  They need to know that there is a good or bad reaction for everything they do online.  In the video we showed earlier, the teacher played different games with her students to help them understand the harmful things that can come from it.

Cyberbullying

Cyber bullying is not a felony but it is a crime.  Cyber bullying is often pertaining to girls.  Students will increase in threats and hate notes and has been increasing the past 7 to 10 years.  Spreading rumors online is considered cyber bullying as well. Taking unflattering pictures and then sending them around can hurt some bodies heart.  Making sure our classrooms are clear from cyber bullying will be important and being aware that it does happen and that we will need to stand up against it.  Allowing parents to become more aware of what goes on will help as well so we as teachers are not the only ones that are fighting this problem.  Its often more than one person ganging up another.   Its hard to put a stop too with increasing technology.
As teachers we need to be careful and teach equality and help our students to respect one another because much can happen off of school primacies and on phones.  I have seen this happening even with students planning to start a food fight at school the next day based off of facebook and phone messaging. It was crazy, it can lead to police even being involved such as in a school where my sister teaches at this present time. Lets encourage them to do what is right as we avoid cyber bullying!

Leaning Enhanced Through Technology

Students learning can be enhanced through the use of technology in the classroom.  Often the use of technology in the classroom results with more time.  What I mean by this is they have the ease of finishing things at home or thinking and then responding from home rather than from the classroom itself.  Cell-phones can be of great impact in the classrooms even when taking poles or texting a blog which the whole class can see.  It allows for better communication between the teacher and the students.  Students can now be taught through using different forms of power-points which can have movies directly on them which allows faster service to the teacher for videos.  Some advantages to using web tools would be that they are easy to use and saves time.  There are limited options thought to using web tools and this can be a disadvantage.  Templates and what not may not be able to be viewed or researched because the program is not covering that specific topic.  It can also create a reliance upon the program itself.  Students will be at a loss because of this because then its turns them into filling out more so busy work and more so zombies rather than thinking for themselves. Technology innovations will always be coming up as we teach our students and we must learn to move along with them! A much different approach may need to be taken when using different technology innovations and lets grab a hold of the thought, analyze it for what the positives and negatives are before we use them or find other means to combine with so that all basses are covered.

Presentation

Copyright Basics is a very important topic faced today in the technological way. When dealing with people and their works we need to be careful and smart. So... What is it?
Copyright is every expression which is original can be immediately copyrighted if used and not your own.  Authors have the right to make copies of own work and publish them to other sources. A number categories of copyrighted items were discusses they are: Literary works, Musical Works, Dramatic Works, Pantomimes and Choreographic works. Each of these play important roles in specifics of how works can be copyrighted.
When not wanting to copyright another persons work we need to make sure we know when something becomes no longer copyrightable by another person.  It starts from when work is created and goes 70 years after that individuals death. A common Rule of Thumb when dealing with copyrighted material is to say when in doubt, assume a work is copyrighted and ask for permission to use it. There is a fair use law that we can look into in circumstances.  However we need to be very careful to look up what we are using to make sure we are not stealing another individuals work.  The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes.  Sound can even be copyrighted.  Make sure not to copy a performable unit of music.  Finances need to be going to the right source and not stolen from the individual.  Teacher need to make use of the public domain and of materials provided by the government and educational institutions.  Collaborate with other teachers to create and spread more material for the public domain. Ask permission from the individual to make sure and be certain.  We see that this is vital as our jobs can be on the line if we are not following the law.

Digital Citizenship

Digital citizenship is a concept which allows students, teachers and even parents to access the knowledge that needs to be taught in order to better use technology.  Users need to know certain concepts and this tool is that very thing for us.  We need to be better informed so that our child's education can be most effective.  It is more than just a teaching tool though, it is a way to prepare students and users for a society full of technology.  Too often we are seeing students as well as ourselves as adults misusing and abusing technology but not sure what to do.  This citizenship also allows us to teach what students are to know as appropriate technology uses as well. Why is it important? Well, for that very reason, it helps us become a better generation that does not make the mistakes that are already known in the technology world.  Even learning what is fastest and which places or technology sources to tap into.  I do not have links that i would consider sharing with other students, yet, but I will seek as I move on in this class to find sources that will educate students to better access the uses of technology so they can climb in the education technological world!

Validity of Internet Sources

Internet Validity can be hard to decipher on whether the source is reliable or not. However, we need to be aware of what we are viewing and what we are using to study off of.  Even when writing papers, we need to make sure our sources are reliable.  Wikipedia is a source that is not reliable says many because anyone can write on it and not have it immediately checked and therefore it could have something false.  CARS stands for a specific acronym we discussed. Credibility stands for a trustworthy source that relies on the author's credentials.  Look at the authors information and date to figure out whether it is credible. Look for sources that have a lot of reviews on them from many different sources.  Accuracy in our sources is crucial as well.  Making sure that the source is up-to-date, factual, detailed, exact, and comprehensive.  Making sure that the source reflects intentions of completeness and accuracy. Reasonableness is figuring out whether the source is fair, balanced, objective, reasoned, without conflict of interest, has absence of fallacies without a slanted tone. The goal is that the source engages the subject thoughtfully and reasonably, concerned with truth. Finally, the S in CARS is "support." Support is making sure the source listed other sources, contact information, available corroboration, claims supported, with documentation supplied.  The goal is that the source provided would convince evidence for the claims made, a source that can be triangulated and have at-least 2 other sources that support it.  I honestly can not remember using the wrong source in my past for assignments however, I will find some sources that are less than valid sources though which are bogus.

Fair Use and Copyright Law

Copyright Basics is a very important topic faced today in the technological way. When dealing with people and their works we need to be careful and smart. So... What is it?

As a Christian these rules do impact me as a Christian.  I never want to take what is rightfully somebody else's.  As a christian wanting to set an example I do not want to allow myself to be slack in this area of being a teacher.  I long to do my best in all things that I do and that means not only keeping the speed limit but also such laws as not copywriting other people's materials or pieces of property of which things stemmed from.

Christian Worldview OH YEAH!!!

A Christian Worldview is a subject many try to nail down and find it very tough.  I Byron Reimer am going to try to do my best to define what this is to me.  A Christian worldview is a worldview built upon the foundation of Jesus Christ.  "Christ" is in Christian.  We get the word Christian from one who follows Christ.  Its a view that looks at life and sifts who one is and what we do through the lenses of this person Christ and the book he gave to us- "The Bible!" Many worldviews are man reaching toward their own made up personal God, when Christianity shows us that God first reached down toward us and sent His son to die for us.  This understanding is the standard for the Christian worldview because we now as individuals look to serve this Jesus Christ who loves us un-conditionally.  We live with our lives as a sacrifice to show our love back but this sacrifice is one filled with joy because he first showed us how to live and not give into temptation.  My Christian worldview is a worldview that is exciting because I know his promises and his compassion and how it is real for me. The Christian worldview affects who I am as a person all the time not just on sundays but 24/7.  It is a worldview that is going to affect eternity if believing in the One God who controls all and is all and saves all and this is a few reasons why I believe and am proud to be a part of Christ's redemptive plan and believe in the Christian worldview.

Use of Technology

Technology in education is very important because of many reasons.  I think its important because of the power that it has in the hearts and lives of our culture as a whole.  Technology shows us how much more we can get accomplished as well as we correspond between one another on blogs.  Technology allows thoughts to be written down with-out being rushed.  The students can be diligent at nights, evenings or morning when their schedules workout to put good effort toward computer assignments.  Smart-boards allow games to be played on them as a class.  In my experience I have loved smart-board use in classes because the class loves to play educational history guessing games as we go through the notes in my practicum experience.  Short movie clips have helped to enhance my interests into history in high school as well.  I love to use online blogs because you can make posts and reply to others intellectually.  I think that technology is important also to keep students attention when we do not just not trust our students in the classroom but rather use technology to be used so that trust is given and allow the students to ruin the use of even cell phones by them-self.  Technology in education is a must.  We need to use it however we need to teach critical thinking with it.  We need to make sure our objectives are being met as teachers with using technology and that technology is not the main objective itself.

A little bit about myself!

I, Byron Reimer, really desire to be a teacher for many reasons.  I know that it is the directions that God has for me as I pursue a life serving him.  I am very open to using my degree overseas or here in America.  My family was missionaries and so that is near and dear to my life.  I really want to impact the lives of middleschoolers wherever I am because it was the most formative 3 years of my life!

I desire to be a life long learner and put that wisdom into the lives of other individuals.  I am so excited to follow through with these dreams and provide for my family as well.  I love teaching science and that is a way to learn more in this area! I desire to pursue teaching to impact others and live with a perspective toward eternity.
